Frequently Asked Questions

This project aims to patch Rome and Medieval 2, with the intent of modernising the game by making it 64-bit with DirectX 11 (instant alt tabbing ftw), fixing performance/stability issues, bugs & crashes, patching the hardcoded limitations out, adding features and giving modders the ability to modify the games further.

It’s not a mod, but a community patch that seeks to polish and improve without straying too far from the original vision of the developers. Think of it as if Rome and Medieval 2 had received another few years of development and patching by Creative Assembly, or as playing these games the way your nostalgia recalls them.

  • A fully 64-bit engine, no 4GB limit (LAA no longer needed) and a new rendering backend
  • Instant alt-tabbing and tons of small QoL additions
  • Tons of crash fixes and bug fixes (way better stability)
  • Improved the campaign AI a lot
  • Massively increased performance (~5x more FPS is not uncommon) supporting huge armies without stutters and “extreme” graphics options for experimentation
  • Lightning-speed end turn times and loading times (for AI spectator mode - 100 turns in 30 seconds)
  • A fully modern, better RTS camera with fixed zooming, middle-mouse rotation and edge panning, zoom-in and zoom-out uncapped by a lot, and many other possible functionalities
  • A fully rotatable campaign map camera
  • Fully working alt-drag (also with ctrl pan drag) and unit card re-ordering (with units showing live kill count and prisoners captured during a battle)
  • Fully working pikemen without sketchy fixes/removing their secondaries; fixed muskets/arquebusiers; fixed two-handers
  • Improved multiplayer-like shared deployment, same factions on both teams
  • STEAM DECK, LINUX and MAC support
  • Improvements to the UI, such as range indicators for ranged units
  • Removed every single major engine limit like factions, regions, religions, cultures, etc.
  • Major expansion of modding tools
  • Not one but two custom scripting APIs for new modding possibilities
  • Compatible with all OG mods

But there are countless more, which you can find in the full changelog.

Are the roadmap and the features above a definitive limit on what can be achieved?

Section titled “Are the roadmap and the features above a definitive limit on what can be achieved?”

The sky is the limit! For the most part the true limit lies only in the number of people committing to this project.

Who’s in charge here? Who are the creators?

Section titled “Who’s in charge here? Who are the creators?”

Aster and Pannoniæ founded the project, but the team has only grown since then. If you can commit to the project (anyone is welcome), you will be there too among the stars.

Why would I use REX instead of Rome: Remastered?

Section titled “Why would I use REX instead of Rome: Remastered?”

REX has already fixed more of the original game’s bugs than the remaster, while avoiding some of the more controversial changes (such as to the UI, cutscenes, main menu and textures/lighting) which the remaster made and generally sticking closer to the original game in these respects. Unlike Rome: Remastered, REX is still in active development and has greater capabilities for modders too.

Are my old save games compatible with REX/M2EX?

Section titled “Are my old save games compatible with REX/M2EX?”

Old vanilla save games will work on REX/M2EX.

However, saves made under REX/M2EX will not work on the original, unpatched games.

Is there a way to contribute to this project?

Section titled “Is there a way to contribute to this project?”

If you wish to contribute, you can hit up the applications channel on Discord.

People with programming skills are very welcome, especially if you have experience with C++, but we don’t just need developers. 2D/3D artists and other skill sets are also in high demand.

Any support helps! Even if it’s giving suggestions or reporting issues/bugs/crashes, they’re all appreciated! Also, feedback in feedback matters, as do many other things like spreading the word or helping other players.

Separately, testing the test versions and providing feedback for them matters too - for test releases, check for the latest release described as a test release in releases and then give some highly appreciated feedback here: feedback.

If you want to be pinged each time something good is up like a new test version - get the “ping” role here in faq.

How do I suggest something and what is allowed?

Section titled “How do I suggest something and what is allowed?”

We absolutely welcome all ideas and suggestions. Some examples of what you might suggest: an exploit to be removed, a vanilla bug to be fixed (a bug appearing without use of REX/M2EX), a gameplay change or something to be added/altered to make the game better.

As you are posting a suggestion, remember to think about the amount of work your proposal may involve and the how much work is still to be done within this project. Also consider what is within the scope of this project and what is e.g. for mods to do. Please do not tag and pester developers in your suggestions. All suggestions are regularly checked by the development team, but that does not mean a new suggestion can go straight to the top of their to do lists.

You can submit your suggestions for Rome 1/REX in suggestions-rtw and Medieval 2/M2EX in suggestions-med2.

Remember that this is for suggestions. For bug reports, head here.

We would strongly advise people reading the suggestions to not attack and vote down someone else’s suggestions, but to try to have a conversation about why you think it’s a good or a bad idea, and how it could be implemented.

No. We don’t do anything like DLL injection (as EOP does), packing, obfuscation or other techniques you’d most commonly find in game cracks. This is just a bog standard .exe replacement. If your antivirus flags the .exe though, please let us know - that would be unusual and we’d definitely want to look into it.

This is a community patch - we modify game files, not anything shady. Modding has been around forever and there’s nothing unusual or risky about what we do. The EULA for both Rome 1 and Medieval 2 essentially prohibits 99% of modding, including simple texture swaps. We are on the same legal grounds and within the same established market practice as many mods (including those that have been around for over a decade).

If you’ve seen people claiming otherwise, it’s most likely the same crowd that has spent years arguing about whether the 4GB/LAA patch is legal, and has been happy after receiving a non-binding company response that does not change the EULA situation and could be reversed at any time. But they are happy to discourage people by any means necessary, including lies, and avoid any discussion when met with counterpoints, just to see progress sink.

Outside the CA environment, people are doing far more extreme things with their games without issue, not to mention the most severe examples, such as the Far Cry 1 source code being on GitHub for years (Ubisoft is the IP holder). Also you can notice that Rome 1/Medieval 2 source code is available on the internet and nobody takes it down, just type on YouTube: “The ‘Rome Total War’ LEAKS” or “Solve ANY Rome Total War mystery with this video”. Not to mention that many popular Rome/Medieval 2 mods use IP from Lord of the Rings, Warhammer fantasy etc and have done so for years now.

Should I be worried about all the “bug fix” entries in the changelog?

Section titled “Should I be worried about all the “bug fix” entries in the changelog?”

Nope. The majority of entries are just fixes for the original game, not a straight up sign of project instability. Most of these fixes (like the pikemen fix) were not doable up until REX/M2EX saved the day, and the longer this project goes on the more we find that needs fixing.

Sometimes minor hiccups occur and it’s 99% of the time dealt with quickly in a hotfix. It’s a fan-made project made in people’s free time, after all.

EOP stands for The Engine Overhaul Project. It is a sort of script extender which some of the newest Medieval 2 mods use. It’s far less potent than M2EX, which can enhance any aspect of the game directly rather than just providing scripting and workarounds for the original game’s quirks.

If you wonder which mods use EOP then simply Google it for the mod of your choosing, ask people playing it, its devs, or consult forums/Discord servers/mod pages. Be mindful that different versions of the same mod may or may not use EOP.

What is the difference between M2EX and EOP?

Section titled “What is the difference between M2EX and EOP?”

Basically, M2EX takes the engine code and upgrades it, porting it to 64-bit, adding a whole lot of QoL features and so on (as listed above).

EOP instead takes the original 32-bit retail exe, starts it, pauses it then injects a bunch of code into it to extend the scripting features of the game with lua. This has its advantages/disadvantages but, basically, it’s a much more “roundabout” way of doing things than REX/M2EX.

The newest releases include an implementation of EOP’s API, and EOP mods are now compatible.

We value how much EOP achieved while dealing with painful reverse engineering workarounds and restricted capabilities. We strongly welcome any cooperation with EOP if possible, on both a technical and a personal level. However at this point, REX/M2EX simply gives much more to both players and modders, and in a more convenient package.

Because it appeared much earlier than M2EX.

Many limitations on what can be modded have been lifted and this work is ongoing. Limits on factions/units/regions etc are gone, custom Squirrel/LUA scripting is now possible, a strategy map editor has been added and in general there are far more options for modding and modding tools. A lot of things which previously require workarounds or were otherwise complex have been simplified, and features previously exclusive to only one of the two games have now been ported across.

There are already a number of mods which have been created expressly to work on REX/M2EX and take advantage of its new capabilities.

I am a modder and I want to use this project, what should I do?

Section titled “I am a modder and I want to use this project, what should I do?”

Read the FAQ, consult the mods channel category, and if needed reach out for help in there or contact the project devs. Remember that this project changes many things, for example from a convoluted, buggy state to properly working, so you may need to adjust certain things in your mod.

I am a content creator, can I count on any help?

Section titled “I am a content creator, can I count on any help?”

Sure. Reach out to the community or the project creators. Just try being specific in your requests, be genuine and produce genuine content. Don’t just nag for views. Reading the FAQ thoroughly, checking out what was added, fixed etc. in the changelog or looking at the roadmap will help you in knowing what to ask for and in producing your content.

Why has this feature or that feature not been added yet?

Section titled “Why has this feature or that feature not been added yet?”

The project is moving very quickly, but the amount of work involved in untangling and improving two games of this age is significant. There are a lot of ambitious feature requests, this is a project being done in people’s free time, and the developers have to focus on stability and bug fixes as well as fancy new features.

The fastest way to speed up progress is to help out!

For REX add this into the target line in .exe properties ./REX.exe -ai -strat:imperial_campaign

For M2EX the same but ./M2EX.exe --ai.debug=1 --misc.bypass_to_strategy=imperial_campaign

You put [cine] show =1 your cfg or launch the game from a shortcut with ./M2EX.exe --cine.show=1

How can I disable camera zooming in on gate breach/killed general, etc?

Section titled “How can I disable camera zooming in on gate breach/killed general, etc?”

Go to the folder where you installed Medieval 2 and look for a file called medieval2.preference.cfg.

Open it and in the [game] section, change 1 to 0 in the following line: event_cutscenes = 1

Unit balance, for example: You said pikemen, two-handers and gunpowder units are fixed properly but they are now either way too OP or they are still useless. Why?

Section titled “Unit balance, for example: You said pikemen, two-handers and gunpowder units are fixed properly but they are now either way too OP or they are still useless. Why?”

If they are too OP - mods or the base game gave them extremely good stats to counteract various combat bugs that have been fixed by this project.

If they are useless or they underperform - some stats should get boosted.

In other words - stats were constructed around a very different environment, including bugs that even EOP could not fix but now REX/M2EX have. So it’s rebalancing time!

If you think that the stats are fine and something is bugged, like unit behaviour/mechanic/stats not working or whatever else - report it. Same goes for any suggestions for animations or something else requiring adjustment to work properly. Just mind that if playing mods - some of them make deep changes to the animations or unit behaviour etc. and the mod devs should take note.

Pikes specifically have to be handed well in battle, and sieges in particular affect their performance for good reason. The crowding mechanic, dispersion of the formation etc. might rightly cause them to drop pikes. Pathfinding is yet to be reworked and this can also be a factor.

I saw a feature in the changelog but it’s not in the latest release. What gives?

Section titled “I saw a feature in the changelog but it’s not in the latest release. What gives?”

To ensure stable builds, some changes might be pulled out for further refinement.

To protect the project, we need to ensure a legal copy is being used to play the games. This is why we require Steam. The GOG release is originally derived from a crack and we have no way of guaranteeing it was acquired legally.

If you have a disc copy of these games, you can redeem a Steam copy for free using the CD key. The Steam versions of these games regularly go on sale.

If you are still confused about anything, have issues with the patch, or if you want to ask about whether anything is possible, try reading these guides again and using the Discord search bar, as many questions will have already been answered. You can refer to the general channel or relay any questions to the community or the original creators of this project.

If you are a new user, ask in newcomers-help first for some help.
